Is it a risk to give a giant special effects blockbuster property like Thor to a director known for off-kilter, low-budget comedies? Is it merely a cynical move in an attempt to mimic the quirkiness of the hugely successful Guardians Of The Galaxy films? Can a unique creative tone even shine through within the confines of the strict Marvel model? And does Waititi’s brand of humour even translate to the big-budget world of EXCEPT IT TOTALLY FUCKING DOES AND YOU CAN FORGET ALL THESE THINGS BECAUSE THIS FILM IS SO MUCH FUN.

  • Hunt For The Wilderpeople

    Forget America and Great Britain: the real special relationship the UK has is with Oceania. I've always felt closer to my Australian and Kiwi brothers than I have our American chums, and I think self-deprecation plays a big part in that. Our friends from across the Atlantic often struggle to laugh at themselves, but our friends in the Pacific have a healthy appreciation of self-mockery; the New Zealander sense of humour feels far more aligned with our own. Perhaps this is why Taika Waititi's comedy Hunt For The Wilderpeople feels so comfortingly familiar: it's an inward-looking comedy that's not afraid to poke fun at its country's own foibles but still manages to feel like a celebration of life on a little island.

  • What We Do In The Shadows

    Finding new ways to exploit the horror genre, particularly the subgenre of vampire lore, is always going to be a difficult task. Try and mix it with romance and you get Twilight. Try mixing it with oodles of sex and you get True Blood. Blend it with shit and you get Dracula Untold. Therefore it goes that flirting with comedy is certain to be the kiss of death, but then every so often, the stars align and you'll get the perfect blend, and mockumentary What We Do In The Shadows is that film. It's warm, charming and hilarious – I could have died from laughing.
