Sorry, was still thinking about 50 Cent. Everybody stop what you're doing and look at this trailer for J.J. Abrams' Super 8!
The other day I had a bit of a moan about Hollywood no longer being capable of producing movies like The Goonies. Whether that's due to audiences changing, the way we consume films evolving or filmmakers growing out of their genres, there's no denying we simply don't get movies like The Flight of The Navigator/Explorers/D.A.R.Y.L. anymore.
Well Spielberg must have been listening. Then he probably direct-messaged Abrams on twitter, to tell him that somebody had stopped believing in the magic of cinema. It's the only explanation for this completely wonderful trailer that evokes the excitement and wide-eyed wonder of my coveted adventure flicks. Check it out below:
Friendship! Bike rides! Token fat kid! Just listen to the music - if that isn't a throwback to E.T. then I don't know what is. I never watched Abrams' TV shows but hear good things, and so far he hasn't put a foot wrong in movieland - almost like he "gets" what a modern audience needs. Could it be that Hollywood has finally found the voice of a new generation? Or will Super 8 be the next Mac and Me?
Must admit, it is affected by Abrams' Lostish attitude ('Let's make a shitload of clusterfucks of unrelated things that we would never explain later'), but still it's a great watch. And the young cast is brilliant. I felt like watching Goonies back in the days when I had no idea what a vagina looks like. Don't know where that idea came from.
