Cancel awareness week

Matt Looker

15th October 2011

It's depressing to think about, I know, but TV cancellations are a fact of life and the statistics for any apparently healthy show do not make for encouraging reading. Here, I've rounded up a few of the victims that have succumbed to this terrible disease.

There are always casualties early on in every television season, some surprising and some not-so. Lets start with the not-so:

Charlies Angels - cancelled after 8 episodes

Lets face it, this reboot of the classic, hugely popular 70s series always looked, frankly, shit. While the original was a show that promoted female empowerment, and the Diaz-Liu-Barrymore movies rode the Girl Power wave (which, Im guessing, was crimson), this recent attempt to cash in on an already popular name looked like nothing more than an excuse to parade forgettable bimbos under the banner of 'exciting television.

Verdict: Good fucking riddance. Now bring on a sexy Cagney And Lacey.
Free Agents - cancelled after 4 episodes

I havent actually heard much about Hank Azarias new show, which might not be completely unrelated to the fact that apparently not many people in the US have been watching it. From what I can find out, Azaria played a divorcee who gets it on with a co-worker. They then decide to just be friends. They then dont. And then they become friends again. Or something. No wonder it got cancelled.

Verdict: Meh. Oh well, its not as if Azaria isnt already a part of one of the most successful and longest-running TV shows of all time.
The Playboy Club - cancelled after 3 episodes

Nooooo! Hugh Hefner meets Mad Men? How could they fuck this up? But apparently they did. Despite a slick 60s fashion and more flesh than you can shake your meat stick at (not recommended - this is a family website), this was apparently a case of all style, no substance. Nice idea, shame about the execution. And other football pundit sayings.

Verdict: Shame. (*shrugs*) Oh well, Im over it.
