19 mini existential crises I had while watching A Ghost Story
Movie Feature | Matt Looker | 22nd August 2017
Forget everything I ever said about Personal Shopper, A Ghost Story is the depiction of harrowing torment in an eternal abyss of obscurity that you always wanted. Assuming that you always wanted it.

Interstellar
Movie Review | Ali Gray | 5th November 2014
As long as Christopher Nolan continues to exist, do we really need Steven Spielberg any more? Ol' King Noles is doing a darn fine job of delivering mega-bucks events movies with small and personal stories at the core; gigantic, universe-expanding motion pictures anchored by daddy issues, the kind which Beardo used to smash out on a regular basis. Interstellar is the latest Chris Nolan project to take a leaf out of Spielberg's playbook - once upon a time it was a Steven Spielberg project after all - and it bears the hallmarks of both directors: it's an ambitious, challenging sci-fi that takes one small step for blockbuster cinema but ultimately remains accessible to all. All the talk of Kubrick and 2001 is light years off the mark: Interstellar is the kind of space odyssey that has only shameless, monolothic entertainment on the agenda.

Ain't Them Bodies Saints
Movie Review | Ed Williamson | 5th September 2013
Well, ain't them? No, I don't understand the title any more than you do. But over the few weeks since I saw this, the advertising for Alpha Papa has influenced me so much that every time I think of it, I imagine Alan Partridge saying the title as an expression of weary frustration. "Guhhhhh, ain't them bodies saints?" But Partridgian asides aside, here's an independent film that paints an engaging picture of love torn asunder on a Southern-fried canvas. Cashback.

ParaNorman
Movie Review | Ed Williamson | 13th September 2012
Like any right-thinking adult, I make it my business to scare a child at least once a week. Otherwise there's a risk they could grow up soft, I always think, what with their Bebos and their Sylvanian Families. Happily, I can now take the day off every once in a while, because stop-motion animation ParaNorman should put the frighteners on them. Might even make them laugh a bit too, but then you can do that just by tickling them.

Tower Heist
Movie Review | Matt | 4th November 2011
For someone who has starred in some of the best comedies of the past decade, Ben Stiller is hardly a guarantee of good quality. For every couple of Zoolanders, there's a Meet The Fockers. And now he's brought Eddie Murphy out of retirement from credibility to try to remember how to be grown-up funny. Sans fatsuit and everything. With so-so action-comedy director Brett Ratner calling the shots, this is destined for the bargain bin, isn't it? Get ready to be shocked and amazed...

I'm Still Here
Movie Review | Ali | 19th September 2010
Reviewing I'm Still Here isn't easy. Neither is watching it. A few weeks ago, I was convinced it was all a set-up, because the situations within are far too contrived to be caught on camera, despite the on and off-screen protestations that, yes, you really are seeing Joaquin Phoenix having a meltdown. The Oscar-nominated actor had apparently ballooned in weight, grown a hobo-chic beard, ditched acting for rapping and had become a full-time, drugged-up asshole. OMG etc.

I'm Still Here trailer - Joaquin Phoenix really is crazy
Movie Trailer | Matt | 18th August 2010
Casey Affleck's documentary about Joaquin Phoenix's decision to quit acting and become a hip-hop rapper is on its way. So is he a) entirely deluded and on the brink of a nervous breakdown, or b) orchestrator of an elaborate hoax?

The Killer Inside Me
Movie Review | Christopher | 9th June 2010
Stepping out into the broad daylight of a summer's afternoon after watching The Killer Inside Me, Michael Winterbottom's entry into the film noir canon, proves a grotesquely incongruous affair. The joy has gone from my life now.

Kubrick's ghost urges you to see The Killer Inside Me
Movie Trailer | Matt | 25th May 2010
Even dead genius filmmakers are swayed by the sight of Jessica Alba in a bra. And now you will be too, thanks to a new trailer and poster.

Wow. Awesome trailer for Michael Winterbottom's The Killer Inside Me
Movie Trailer | Ali | 5th November 2009
Every once in a while, a trailer comes along and knocks me sideways. Michael Winterbottom's The Killer Inside Me is one such trailer. Also, it has Jessica Alba getting spanked, but that's not why I like it. Honest.
