"Hey girl, I made a surreal scary nonsense film because Iâ€™m a tortured, sensitive artist. Want to watch it with me? I think youâ€™ll like it. Itâ€™s got loads of symbolism about, like, women and sex and monsters and theatre and street lighting. And thereâ€™s funny dancing in it. And lots of fake blood. And fire. And lots of bright colours. And a scene where Doctor Who cuts off someoneâ€™s lips with a pair of scissors. Want it see it, girl? Hey girl. Hey. HEY. Aww." Detachment

'Elegiac': one of those words of whose meaning you've never quite been certain, but you're fairly sure you'd know the thing it describes when you saw it. Now, I reckon Detachment is pretty elegiac. It certainly felt like it. The word kept popping into my head the whole time I was watching it. So bear with me for 900 words or so while I try to figure out whether it was, then I'll look it up. Oh, and if the promise of a dictionary definition's not enough for you, this is one of the best films I've seen all year. Just saying.

Mad Men: season five

Several times during the interviews before Mad Men's fifth season premiered, we heard the mantra from Matthew Weiner when asked for the season's theme: "When is everything going to get back to normal?" This being Mad Men, this could've meant any number of things: some sort of high-minded allegory for cultural upheaval, a warning not to expect the characters to revert to type, or one of those loose ideas they throw in from time to time that seem meaningless, then significant once you've spent three hours and a couple of Old-Fashioneds thinking about it. Now we've seen the whole thing, it makes a lot of sense.

That Ryan Gosling: so hot right now. It's easy to forget he started his career as a Disney Mouseketeer in the same stable as Britney, Christina and Justin, but today Baby Goose finds himself with two critically-acclaimed movies out on the same day and a Clooney Oscar-grabber still to come. Ladies, if you thought he was hot stuff in Crazy Stupid Love as a spray-tanned, six-packed womaniser, then prepare for your ovaries to implode when you see him play a strong-and-silent getaway driver with a penchant for deep, meaningful gazing sessions. "Hey girl," he seems to say. "I'm capable of astonishing violence, but I'll make a good makeshift father for your son, too." Make no mistake: he's husband material.
