Review: Captain Marvel is predictably great fun by numbers

It seems strange now to consider any new Marvel movie to be a risk. After 20 films, each amassing box office receipts equal to the size of entire national economies, surely a new instalment of the MCU can only ever be a sure thing at this stage? And yet, here we are, with a film that is about risky as Marvel gets now; not because this is its first female-fronted film (Wonder Woman has kapowed that glass ceiling already), but because we are dealing with a character most wonâ€™t know, with abilities that are supposed to be more powerful than anything we have ever seen before, played by a still relatively obscure lead actress. Oh and thereâ€™s that little thing of presenting her as the Endgame saviour of the Infinity War. Have no doubt, Marvel is rolling the dice here, even if they are safely loaded.

Guardians Of The Galaxy

Just for a second there it looked like Marvel might have let their foothold slip. Edgar Wright's departure had irreparably sullied Ant-Man; Captain America 3's release date clash with DC's Batman V Superman in 2016 seemed like a suicide mission; the suspicion lingered that Thor: The Dark World wasn't actually all that great in retrospect. Momentary blips, all, because Guardians Of The Galaxy is the most confident, daring and balls-out fun Marvel movie of the lot. The last two Marvel releases have been samey sequels, adhering largely to a tried and tested formula, but Guardians Of The Galaxy is one of Marvel's best films simply because it doesn't really feel like it's part of the Marvel universe at all.

Lincoln

It shouldn't be this hard. It shouldn't be a chore to watch a film critics have described as "phenomenal", "indelible" and "masterly". The Lincoln awards screener disc - 'For Your Consideration in all categories', in case you hadn't guessed â€“ has been sitting on a pile of DVDs this big for about a week now, and I've been avoiding it for just as long. The other day, I literally chose to watch Lockout* over Lincoln. That's the extent of my disinterest. However, circumstances conspired to make it today's sole viewing option â€“ one snow-storm and one Netflix outage later, and Steven Spielberg's latest made its way onto the TV by default. Clearly the members of the Academy didn't share my apathy.
