    Hello there. I am on a plane as you read this. At the time of writing, I am somewhere over Winnipeg. I'm talking to you via the wonder of £25.99 WiFi. I've been very lucky to be invited to cover the Disney D23 Expo in California over the weekend, and although I wouldn't dream of humblebragging my way through this post, it does promise to be very exciting, and I think you'll all agree that, yeah Ali, relax, you deserve this guy, great job. Anyway, before that, I have an 11-hour flight to sit through. Eleven! That's like… four movies! I'm not going to watch four movies. But I did just sit through Assassin's Creed.

    Brad Pitt, I have decided, is too handsome. My reaction to more or less anything he does on screen these days is instinctively: "Yeah, but this character wouldn't look like that. No one does." In Allied, which is fine and all that but a bit daft, he marries Marion Cotillard while looking amazing then grows suspicious she is a spy while looking amazing, and I can't shake the feeling that all of this looking amazing is part of a comfort zone out of which he's unprepared to step.

    Jacques Audiard works exclusively in the field of 'Directing Amazing French Films Which I'm Nonetheless Always Too Tired To Actually Watch'. Determined to break my duck, having utterly failed to watch A Prophet and The Beat That My Heart Skipped since their release, I raced to the first of my morning press screenings at the London Film Festival last month. I was in such a rush to get there, it was only when I sat down in the National Film Theatre that I realise I'd been wearing my shirt inside out. Thankfully, Rust & Bone was amazing and well worth the fashion faux pas: I'm tempted to say it turned me inside out emotionally, but that'd just be a shit excuse for a terrible non-sequitur. There were people shagging in its other screening – I'd kill for an anecdote like that. But I digress.

    Christopher Nolan is one stealthily clever bastard. While we've all been gasping at jaw-dropping trailers and trying to glean meaning from mind-boggling posters, the actual plot for Inception has remained relatively under wraps. Oh sure, it's a heist movie involving dreams, and you could always guarantee that Nolan would deliver a hefty dose of headfuckery with this subject matter, but you can check your assumptions in at the door - this is a film that defies all your expectations except for one: it is a work of genius.
