Mollyâ€™s Game

If it wasnâ€™t immediately obvious from the impenetrable wall of dialogue that looms over the opening scene, Mollyâ€™s Game was written by famed fast-talker Aaron Sorkin. If it wasnâ€™t immediately obvious he directed it too, the clues are there to be found: scenes that smash cut through shot lists like a machine gun play home to worldly and wise characters who spew dictionaries of insightful dialogue. Mollyâ€™s Game is adapted from the biography of a poker hostess who ran high stakes games for big game players, but the movie has more of Sorkinâ€™s fingerprints on it than his own typewriter. Often if a writer-director canâ€™t remove their own ego from the equation it can be problematic, but thankfully the story of Mollyâ€™s Game feels tailor-made for Sorkinâ€™s style: though occasionally weighed down by sheer volume of dialogue, itâ€™s nonetheless smart, slick and - thanks to a towering Jessica Chastain performance - more than a bit sexy.

Like you, I was very disappointed to see that Edgar Wright decided to part ways with Marvel and Ant-Man, because he's a director who is capable of doing wonderful things with a camera; the combination of Edgar Wright, Paul Rudd and the Marvel universe made me feel a little giddy. Still, I can take comfort in the fact that he's basically already made a superhero movie in Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, and not only that, he had Beck provide the tunes. Ant-Man Shmant-Man - Ali.

The next time someone tells you about how 3D is the future of cinema, sit them down in front of Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, preferably on the biggest screen you can find, and watch their jaw hit the floor. Here we have a film that's so sharp, so visually stimulating and so whip-smart, it positively crackles with energy. It may well be the best-looking movie of its generation. 3D is where it's at, huh? Spare me. The future of cinema lies in the hands of filmmakers like Edgar Wright.
