Prometheus

For all the talk of Prometheus "sharing the same DNA" as Alien, Ridley Scott's prequel doesn't bear much family resemblance to its granddaddy. The economy of horror that served his 1979 effort so well is replaced by a big-budget, star-gazing sci-fi that wants you to know it has size on its side. Hugely ambitious and staggering in its grand designs, Prometheus is almost hamstrung by the fact it is an Alien movie at all â€“ the mishmash of grotesque body-horror and chin-stroking existentialism does not always make for the most coherent movie, but it is at least an entertaining one and certainly no black mark on the franchise.

Once again, Guy Ritchie delves into Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's lesser-known casebook of Sherlock Holmes â€“ the one filed under 'improbably explosive' (subfolder: homoeroticism) â€“ and pulls together a sequel that, by the law of the blockbuster, is destined to be a lazy rehash of the first film. However, not so in this case; Ritchie has upped the ante on every level, building on the same style and plot devices as Holmes' last outing but raising the stakes in the process and delivering an adventure that's just as fun as the first time round.

The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest

Previously, in the Millennium trilogy... Lisbeth Salander aka The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is a bit of a social spaz, but she's an uber-hacker capable of dishing out epic haxx0r pwnage, like a one-girl 4chan. Mikael Blomkvist is a suave investigative journalist who busts cases wide open and has lots of sex because he's not at all representative of the book's author. Lots of people bought their adventures because writer Stieg Larsson died before they were released, which makes them better.
