Trust me, this is going somewhere. I think.
So, myself and contributor Matt were engaged in scintillating conversation at a party last night (at one point, we genuinely discussed Spider-Man's correct hand gesture when web-shooting) when a topic of conversation came up that almost made me forget about cocktail sausages and cheap beer.
What's your Mum's favourite film?
Now considering all I ever talk about is film and film stars, I'm bored of being asked what my favourite film is, not only because it's a total conversational non-starter, but because no one particularly cares what I think about anything.
But my Mum? Hell, who wouldn't value her opinion? Mums have earned the right to have a valid opinion on anything. Although she goes to the cinema about once every eight years, I'm pretty sure her favourite film is still Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves. I remember her seeing it at least five times in cinemas and almost endlessly on video. She watched the shit out of that piece of shit. Kevin Costner probably still gets her letters.
For some reason, this question fascinated me. We floated it around the party (yes, I may have had a few drinks by this point) and got back a few random answers. One Romancing The Stone. One King Kong (2005 remake). One Sound Of Music. I think there might even have been an Anchorman in there too. The results were scattershot to say the least.
Conclusion? Mums are loose cannons when it comes to film. They always seem to pick totally unexpected choices. No Mum has ever picked a Fellini film as their favourite, but Overboard? Private Benjamin? Housesitter? They love them some Goldie Hawn. You could probably guess what any random hipster's favourite movie is ("Anything by Jonze or Gondry") but I bet you couldn't guess their mother was a huge fan of Look Who's Talking Too.
Okay, so maybe it didn't really go anywhere, but I want to know all the same. What is your Mum's favourite film?
