  • Review: Vice shows Dick Cheney as a man with few virtues and ohhh, I see what you did there

    Movie Review | Becky Suter | 21st January 2019

My knowledge of Dick Cheney pretty much started and ended with knowing him as the veep who shot a guy in the face whilst on a hunting trip. Had I bothered to actually watch all of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart episodes I've recorded over the years, I would have known that Cheney has always been the dark heart of American politics; a man rotten to his very core, which itself is a tiny black hole from which no joy or light can escape, who's been haunting the White House long before President Trump gleefully served McNugget BBQ sauce out of the Lincoln silver gravy boats to those footballers. Luckily, Adam McKay is here again to distil complex information to dummies like me, although newsflash - the political system is like, totally corrupt, you guys.

  • The Big Short

    Movie Review | Ali Gray | 26th January 2016

"I have a feeling that in a few years, the banks are going to be doing exactly the same thing," says despondent financier Mark Baum (Steve Carell) as the world teeters on the brink of economic meltdown. "They're going to blame it on immigrants and poor people." The financial crisis of 2008 is mired in so much Wall Street-patented obfuscatory bullshit you need a shovel to get down to the nitty gritty, but Adam McKay's A-list crib sheet The Big Short boils it down to the essentials: the US banks committed the largest and most audacious case of fraud ever perpetrated at the cost of every man, woman and children in America - and they got away with it.

  • Anchorman 2: when marketing works against a movie

    Movie Feature | Ali Gray | 25th November 2013

I'm assuming that you, like me, are looking forward to Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. Can I also assume that you, like me, have cringed your way through every single piece of Ron Burgundy-related marketing for the movie so far? It's great that Will Ferrell has been making himself available to shoot reactive 'viral' videos on various topical subjects, the latest being a laugh-free Doctor Who skit, but they're having the inverse affect to the one intended: these mini-marketing exercises are making me less excited about the actual movie.

  • Casa De Mi Padre

    Movie Review | Rob | 6th June 2012

"It's funny because Will Ferrell speaks Spanish!" was probably the gist of the Casa De Mi Padre brainstorming session. Yes, Will Ferrell does speak excellent Spanish, and yes, he is very funny with it. But this low-budget Spanish language Mexican western action comedy caper offers more than just cheap racial stereotypes: it's one of the funniest, cleverest spoofs since Hot Shots. Yeah you heard me right, Scary Movie 4.

  • The Other Guys

    Movie Review | Christopher Ratcliff | 21st September 2010

Before leaving the house this morning to see Will Ferrell's 403rd high-concept comedy this century, I quickly glanced at today's Guardian, the film and music section to be more precise, where the esteemed film critic Peter Bradshaw gave The Other Guys an unprecedented 5 stars. Gosh. Being as I want to be just like Peter Bradshaw (P-Braddy) when I does grow up, I figured I'd have to give it 5 stars too, no matter what I actually thought of the film.

  • Anchorman 2 is definitely not happening (unless it does)

    Movie News | Ali | 19th July 2010

Director Adam McKay has given the final word on Anchorman 2. Or has he? He has. I think. Can't I just quote some Anchorman to fill up this space instead? "Milk was a bad choice!" Ahahahahaha!

  • Paramount pass on Anchorman 2

    Movie News | Ali | 29th April 2010

Director Adam McKay has revealed that Paramount wouldn't go for a sequel to Anchorman, even after he cut the budget substantially. The Magic 8-Ball wants what it wants.

Whaddya know? Will Ferrell still makes comedies! Even stranger, this one actually looks funny! Here's your first look at The Other Guys, the buddy cop comedy from Anchorman director Adam McKay.
