Review: Hubie Halloween is a sorry excuse for a film, but don't expect an apology

It was cruel, really - to give us a glimpse of an oft-quoted character from Adam Sandler's greatest creation, Happy Gilmore, and then to undo any hint a comedy of that calibre would be in store mere seconds later when the funny voices and scat humour kicked in. And this is a film obsessed with scat: farts, poo, piss, it's got it all. Which is apt, because I've never seen anything go to shit as quickly as Hubie Halloween.

Shhh the kids are asleep. It's mummy and daddy time now, a chance to do all the things you can't do during the day. Let's make a cup of tea and put on a film. Two hours gone and now it's bedtime. The film was fine. Not good, not bad. Just fine, but more importantly we survived today. Lamp off. Start again tomorrow. One day closer to death. Everything is just fine, and it's not for me to judge that your life has become a static series of achievement-void days spent clockwatching and sometimes not even seeing the sun.

Time was, you could get a bit of a reaction by saying Adam Sandler was a good actor. You'd be the toast of the cognoscenti, lauded for your brave and rare insight, or at the very least one of those professional contrarians who make film Twitter such a rich and challenging environment. These days the evidence is there and the idea's not controversial: everyone knows he can do it when he can be bothered changing out of his tracksuit. Maybe it's time to think of him a bit differently.

The problem with Pixels: game over for Jane Krakowski

Adam Sandler's latest movie Pixels has lots of problems - the foremost being that it's an Adam Sandler movie - but its most heinous crime is surely the egregious waste of Jane Krakowski. The actress, who is by any measure the most comedically gifted of the entire Pixels cast, plays the First Lady to US President Kevin James and has approximately three lines in the entire movie (none of which are jokes). Pixels is a case study in how to waste funny women.

One of the many questions that spring to mind while watching Pixels - such as "Why doesn't any of this make any sense?" and "What would it take for Adam Sandler's tired Deputy Dawg face to register an iota of genuine emotion?" - is: Who is this film supposed to be for? As a PG movie packed full of fairly obscure 80s references, you can only assume that its core audience is nostalgic parents who won't mind it when, on the journey home afterwards, their child takes a brief pause from unpacking the latest expansion kit for their favourite immersive online RPG to ask: "What's a Donkey Kong?"

This is a genuine question: do you find the Red Bull cinema adverts funny? When they come on before a film, do you raise a wry smile, chuckle and say, "Good one, Red Bull!"? If you're the type of person who laughs out loud in an otherwise silent cinema at those types of adverts, you will like Blended. However, I suspect you are an awful human being.
