Review: Christopher Robin is a stark reminder that adulthood sucks ass

If you hadnâ€™t realised it from the twee, plinky-plonky marketing, Christopher Robin is a movie aimed more at large adult sons than it is small children - the kind of film that insists the key to happiness and the secret to being a better man, husband and father, is to be more childlike. Thatâ€™s kind of Disneyâ€™s whole thing right now; the studio seems intent on arresting the development of adults around the world with superhero universes and space sagas and glitter-flecked versions of the movies they loved as children. But hey, if thereâ€™s any character thatâ€™s going to cut through corporate cynicism, itâ€™s Winnie the Pooh, a bear after my own heart, living my trouserless dream, who is so loveable he could tell me he just disembowelled and stuffed the other residents of the Hundred Acre Wood and Iâ€™d still let him bumble around my house, stuffing his adorable face with Â£13-a-jar Manuka.

In Marvel's Agent Carter, announced last week as a star vehicle for the quite splendid Hayley Atwell, Peggy Carter must "balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life - Steve Rogers". You've got to hand it to them: they're confident enough that we're on board with their 14 movies a year that they'll try a TV series where the most interesting person has just nipped out to the shops. Black Mirror: Be Right Back

You read a million articles a week about the creeping ubiquity of technology. Most of them adopt a negative tone from the get-go: statistics showing the high numbers of online interactions we make are offered as evidence that they're replacing our real-life ones, without the idea that they might in fact be supplementing or even enriching them ever raised. This simple scaremongering fear of the unknown is absent in Black Mirror. It's written by people who embrace technology, and use this knowledge to imagine its dark potential. And it is at times quite brilliant.

The Sweeney

"We're The Sweeney, shithead. You're nicked!" grunts Ray Winstone after a rather brutal pre-title sequence. With that, Nick Love goes all Batman Begins with his gritty, swear-filled, unapologetic vision of The Sweeney - a far cry from the dodgy trousers, funny haircuts and, I imagine, casual racism and flagrant sexism of the John Thaw and Dennis Waterman days. The '70s, huh? Good times.
