Review: Enola Holmes is an energetic romp that runs out of steam
Movie Review | Luke Whiston | 10th October 2020
English people sound one of three ways in Hollywood films: grubby urchin begging for a crumb of bread, Hugh Grant being wanked off by a malfunctioning robot, and Sherlock Holmes. Having been an English person for nearly forty years and travelled most of the country, I have never met a single person who sounds like any of them. Obviously I'm not tossing off enough floppy toffs. But just because we don't sound that way doesn't mean we don't think like it - which I'm about to handily prove by adopting my finest Sherlock big posho internal monologue for a review of Enola Holmes, what what!

Review: The Witcher is the fantasy bobbins you never knew you needed
TV Review | Luke Whiston | 8th January 2020
"Cheap. Fast. Good. Pick two." So goes that old maxim of the creative world. I guess what they didn't mean was "pick two things and bludgeon them into the triangle of choice with the nearest rock while screaming at it to make sense" - the two things in the case of Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher being a hollowed out Game of Thrones where we're parachuted into the lore with no explanation and left to fend for ourselves, and blinkered '90s after-school spellcasting greenscreen of death Knightmare. The result being a foul-mouthed mess that somehow defies all cynical attempts to bring it down.

It wasn’t evil aliens that defeated the Justice League: it was facial hair.

Important investigation: what would Henry Cavill's Superman look like with a moustache?
Movie Feature | Ali Gray | 25th July 2017
In the true spirit of investigative journalism, we recently learned that Henry Cavill will be sporting a moustache during his Justice League reshoots, so we set to work imagining what such a thing would look like. Screw you, Failing New York Times, that Pulitzer is mine.

Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice
Movie Review | Matt Looker | 24th March 2016
The greatest gladiator match in the history of the world: God versus man.
By which, of course, I mean Zack Snyder, the all-powerful harbinger of wanton destruction, versus us, the humble cinema-goer, merely looking for some entertainment. Some cool stuff, for sure. Maybe even a joke of two. It's Student from the School of Michael Bay versus, say, Andy from Dagenham. Who will win? -

The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
Movie Review | Matt Looker | 12th August 2015
The action hero has come a long way since the 60s. Once calm, unobtainable specimens of perfection have gradually morphed into tough, emotionally closed anti-heroes, and then into testosterone-fuelled musclemen, and now they're flawed and troubled characters in touch with their - ugh - feelings. Superheroes are forever in search of their own life purpose (the clue is in the word 'superhero', guys), lone wolf cops have money worries, even Tom Cruise is now contractually obligated to have his character make at least one mistake in his movies. And James Bond cries now. He actually cries. So call it an adaptation, a rehash, another unoriginal concept in a Hollywoodland bereft of creativity, or whatever - The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is still one of the most refreshing action films you'll see this year.

Henry Cavill rumoured for cameo appearance in Batman Vs Superman
Movie News | Ali Gray | 17th November 2013
Following months of Batman casting news, inescapable rumours surrounding the possible introduction of Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman, the ongoing scenario regarding the forthcoming Justice League franchise and the possibility of appearances from DC characters including Nightwing, it's rumoured that Henry Cavill - star of 2013 movie Man Of Steel - might cameo in Batman Vs Superman. Probably not, though, let's face it.

Lessons learned from The Superman Project
Movie Feature | Ali | 15th June 2013
I've spent the last two years obsessively dodging any and all promotions of Man Of Steel, purely so I could see a blockbuster untainted by trailers, posters and news stories. Now, having seen - and enjoyed - Man Of Steel - I ask the question: what have I learned? How have I grown? And why did I start doing this again? Here are my findings.

Man Of Steel
Movie Review | Ali | 14th June 2013
Wow. That was my first reaction upon exiting Man Of Steel. Not necessarily 'Wow' in the sense that I had been overly impressed, but 'Wow' like I had been totally exhausted by the experience and felt so light-headed my brain couldn't quite process words with more than one syllable. Now I've had time for my synapses to cool, I can downgrade 'Wow' to 'Huh': though Man Of Steel is epic in the truest sense of the word, it pummels you so hard with its epicness that you don't have the time or the spatial awareness to notice its flaws. Maybe it's the fact I saw it cold, purposefully not having watched any trailers or promotional material beforehand, but flying blind made for an interesting experience – and dare I say, I perhaps enjoyed it more than others might due to that same lack of preconceptions.
