Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Movie Review | Ali Gray | 12th October 2014
So I finally got old. Morning: doctor's appointment for dry skin. Afternoon: phone calls with estate agents and surveyors and mortgage advisors. Evening: still-aching limbs from a football match played 48 hours previously. I startle awake to find myself sat in a Paramount screening room ready to watch the latest iteration of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a phenomenon I was probably too old to enjoy guilt-free the first time round a quarter of a century ago. "Let's see those hands in the air!" says a company spokesperson, urging attendees to don the giant green foam hands provided for a photo opportunity. I am secretly glad I didn't pick any up on the way in. Because I am old as fuck.

The Dictator
Movie Review | Ali | 11th May 2012
Jokes are funny, aren't they? I don't mean in the 'Ha ha, Jimmy Carr is totes a legend LOL' kind of way; more I find them a strange way to get a laugh – painstakingly constructing sentences and cadences to maximise hilarity. It's a far more traditional, way more precise craft than surrealist, situational or observational comedy, and not one that's overly-familiar to Sacha Baron Cohen, who has thus far mostly traded on the comedy of embarrassment – the exquisite awkwardness that hidden cameras and unsuspecting participants provide. The Dictator represents his return to scripted comedy after the Borat/Bruno double-header, but any fears that Cohen's appeal would effectively be neutered while working with a safety net are swiftly allayed – this showcases his talents on the page as well as on the screen.

What else are you going to do? Watch television? Don't make me laugh. Look at that gorgeous poster. John Malkovich really doesn't want to share that tangerine, does he?

Why? Because Michael Bay is saying he won't. Oh Michael, you are such a master of deception!

Jennifer's Body
Movie Review | Ali | 8th November 2009
Recently I spoke of the lack of prominent female figures in the movie industry. Well, here are three on the same film. First, you have director Karyn Kusama of Aeon Flux and Girlfight fame. Penning the script is Oscar-winning scribe du jour Diablo Cody, hot off Juno. Then, most prominent of all, you have star and full-time erection facilitator Megan Fox, who's somehow become the hottest property in female film - and even she'd be first to admit she's no idea why.

It was a toss-up between a picture of shiny robot cars or Megan Fox for this picture. The shiny robot cars won.
