  • LFF 2017: Call Me By Your Name

    Movie Review | Becky Suter | 26th October 2017

Following on from 2015's A Bigger Splash, Luca Guadagnino continues his fascination with swimming pools, sultry Italian summers and dancing men with a heartbreaking coming-of-age tale set in 1983. It's a film so alluring and luminous it almost makes up for the fact I never experienced a holiday romance of my own. Who knows what could have happened had Armie Hammer's family ever decided to holiday during the late 90s at Rockley Park, Bournemouth's premier caravan park? While I lament the life that could've been, I'll have to content myself with this transcendental account of first love that is the very definition of bittersweet. It's seductive, sensual, and at one point someone ejaculates into a peach. It's got everything.

  • Miles Ahead

    Movie Review | Ed Williamson | 14th April 2016

Miles Ahead is obviously an awful punning title for a Miles Davis biopic, like "The Biggie They Are, The Harder They Smalls" or something. Or so I thought until someone told me it was the name of one of his albums, which reveals how much I know about jazz and how much Miles Davis knew about good puns.

  • Steve Jobs

    Movie Review | Ali Gray | 5th November 2015

Was Steve Jobs a genius? Was he a revolutionary? Did he change the world? Or was he just an egotistical asshole? Danny Boyle's Jobs iOpic, powered by word processor Aaron Sorkin, doesn't so much pick a side as it does tick all the boxes. Michael Fassbender's Apple guru is at once exhilaratingly wise and exhaustingly obstinate; a complex man with fearsome drive but fundamental flaws; a man who doesn't deserve a glowing biopic or a Hollywood hatchet job. Boyle's portrait of the Cupertino legend is a fizzing, lively affair that certainly has you convinced of one man's genius, although we're guessing that man wasn't supposed to be Aaron Sorkin.

  • Blue Jasmine

    Movie Review | Ed Williamson | 27th September 2013

Never seen a Woody Allen film before. You'd think one might have been on while I was in the same room at some point over the last 34 years, but no: never. People don't half talk a lot in them, it turns out. Not that I've anything against that, it's just I'm mainly used to things where people shoot each other in the knees rather than sit around running their mouths the whole time. Meh, maybe it'll catch on.

  • Snooker tips with Arnold Rothstein

    TV Video | Ed Williamson | 27th November 2012

Arnold Rothstein, racketeer and crime kingpin, gives the first in an almost-certainly-not-regular series of tips on snooker. Jointly sponsored by Highland Spring mineral water and the Jewish Mob.

  • A Serious Man

    Movie Review | Anna | 21st November 2009

According to the Shrdinger's Cat paradox, if you put a cat in a sealed box with a vial of poison that has a 50-50 chance of being released and killing the cat (sorry cat lovers), then until the box is unsealed, the cat is neither alive or dead. It exists in both states until the box is unsealed and the cat is observed to be one thing or the other.
