  • Review: The King is a noble effort, if not majestic, rings Hollow, etc.

    Movie Review | Luke Whiston | 20th November 2019

To my shame as an Englishman I am not well-versed in the works of William Shakespeare. I know the gist of Romeo & Juliet, and that there's a character called Bottom in another one. But if you put me on the spot and told me to write an analysis of The Taming of the Shrew, you'd probably walk in on me on the toilet half an hour later watching YouTube tutorials on how to hypnotise small mammals. Not that I don't appreciate the plays - their effect on the world's culture is undeniable - just beyond my school years I've struggled to find the enthusiasm and time to really get into them. Don't ask me why I can recite Congo word-for-word, though.

  • Review: Possum is a horrifying nightmare to make Marenghi proud

    Movie Review | Matt Looker | 22nd October 2018

"Who am I? Perhaps you have met me twixt sleep and wake, in the penumbra of uncertainty you call 'unconsciousness'," the great Garth Marenghi once said. "Or perhaps you've met me at a book signing." While the basic set-up of Marenghi creator Matthew Holness' directorial debut could have easily been cooked up by the horror writer/dreamweaver himself, there is no follow-up punchline in sight here. Possum is all demented nightmare fuel filtered through mental instability and emotional repression. Its business is 'chill', impure and simple.

  • Deliver Us From Evil

    Movie Review | Ali Gray | 31st August 2014

Have you ever had your enjoyment of a film completely derailed by a small, insignificant part of that movie? A niggle that becomes a bother than becomes all you can think about? I had that with possession thriller Deliver Us From Evil, a competent, forgettable horror flick from the guy who made Sinister. It's a fairly enjoyable movie, if a little flat and unambitious, but in terms of possession movies starring C-list actors with bad scripts, it's par for the course. Except for one thing. A single sound effect. Which ruins the entire movie.
