  • Review: Hubie Halloween is a sorry excuse for a film, but don't expect an apology

    Movie Review | Luke Whiston | 12th October 2020

It was cruel, really - to give us a glimpse of an oft-quoted character from Adam Sandler's greatest creation, Happy Gilmore, and then to undo any hint a comedy of that calibre would be in store mere seconds later when the funny voices and scat humour kicked in. And this is a film obsessed with scat: farts, poo, piss, it's got it all. Which is apt, because I've never seen anything go to shit as quickly as Hubie Halloween.

  • The Death Of Stalin

    Movie Review | Ed Williamson | 23rd October 2017

By now the central premise of Armando Iannucci's recent satirical output is clear enough, or has maybe just about been done to death: in politics, everyone's a chancer, making it up on the fly and looking out for number one. In The Death of Stalin there's an extra layer of irony, too: under Communism, there isn't supposed to be a number one to look out for. It's kind of the point.

  • Man very good at pretending to be other man

    TV News | Ed Williamson | 14th October 2014

I should like to draw your attention to the fact that a 29-year-old Yorkshireman called Marc Pickering is currently playing a young Nucky Thompson in Boardwalk Empire's flashback scenes, and giving the best Steve Buscemi impersonation you're likely to see.

  • Too soon: the end of Empire

    TV Feature | Ed Williamson | 13th January 2014

This year's fifth season of Boardwalk Empire will be its last. Most good shows these days have the knack of stopping just at the right time, but for me, this one could have run and run.

  • Well done for looking old, Boardwalk Empire poster

    TV Feature | Ed Williamson | 9th August 2013

Funny thing: Boardwalk Empire's all about old-timey people and stuff that happened to them in, like, olden times and that, but none of the promotional stuff's ever been made to look old before. I guess Instagram filters were less widespread this time last year. (Trailer here too, which would look a lot more authentically Prohibition-era if it wasn't on YouTube.)

  • The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

    Movie Review | Neil | 12th March 2013

In order to raise this review to an intellectual level beyond all others, I learned the word 'prestidigitation', which means 'sleight of hand': the cunning technique by which magicians fool you into thinking you really do have a neverending supply of loose change behind your ears. That done, all I need to do now is slip it casually into my prose, like, oh, I don't know, a magician employing prestidigitation. That was pretty smooth, right? (*runs away in a puff of smoke*)

  • You can't be half a gangster (acceptable fraction unspecified)

    TV Video | Ed Williamson | 13th August 2012

Well then, what is a permissible fraction of gangsterdom, Boardwalk bloody Empire? Three-quarters of a gangster? Wouldn't I look stupid wearing a fedora with a quarter of it cut out? If I show up at a backroom card game with only three-quarters of the usual stake, what's going to happen? I'll be laughed out of the place, that's what. Think it through.

  • Boardwalk Empire promo vids now legal tender in Greece

    TV Video | Ed Williamson | 28th September 2011

In the absence of an economy strong enough to keep it in shoulder-hair trimmers and baklava, the National Bank of Greece has asked HBO to lend it some of its billions of teaser clips, character videos and behind-the-scenes trailers for Boardwalk Empire's second season to use as its currency. "We were happy to help," an HBO executive explained. "It's got to the stage where even hobos won't take them off us anyway."

  • We risk becoming a Boardwalk Empire fansite with this new trailer

    TV Video | Matt Looker | 31st August 2011

Ive run out of things to say about Nucky. Nucky. Nucky...nope, doesnt even look like a recognisable word to me anymore.

  • HOLD EVERYTHING: Steve Buscemi walks along, looks at people

    TV Video | Ed Williamson | 11th August 2011

Just like they used to in the twenties, considered by many the golden age of walking along and looking at people. Right up until the Walking Along and Looking at People Prohibition Order of 1927, after which you could only do it in Walkeasies. And, to a lesser extent, Lookeasies.
