Why I Love... Peter Falk in Made
Movie Feature | Ali | 2nd July 2011
With Peter Falk's sad passing last week, I thought it was about time I reposted this, a feature I wrote back when I was working on Hotdog magazine in 2006. Falk is of course better known as unshakable TV detective Columbo, but I always loved his character in Jon Favreau's Made, a kind of quasi-sequel to Swingers. Here's a few hundred words on why.

The Dilemma
Movie Review | Ali | 23rd January 2011
Like The Break-Up before it, The Dilemma is a deceptively straight-laced Vince Vaughn comedy that's just as concerned with exploring the dynamics of relationships as it is with crowd-pleasing gags and physical comedy. Also like The Break-Up before it, The Dilemma is quite enjoyable until its characters stop behaving like rational adults and start acting like they've just realised they've got a film to finish.

Couples Retreat
Movie Review | Matt | 15th October 2009
It's been 13 years since Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn first showed us the "money" in Swingers, and each collaboration in the meantime hasn't quite measured up to that exceptional debut. Can Couples Retreat finally live up to expectations? Unfortunately, no - it's good, but it's not on the money.

Why I Love... Swingers
Movie Feature | Ali | 16th September 2005
Shit. Oh shit. She's looking at me. I think she's actually waiting for me to say something. Fuuuuck. Say something out of left field; throw her, keep it relaxed and funny, drag her into your own world and keep her interested. "Drag racing is awesome!" Fuck, I can't believe I just said those words to a girl. I d...

Wedding Crashers
Movie Review | Ali | 17th July 2005
Reasons why real life isn't as good as the movies #47: Weddings. Example? Sunday - I go to see Wedding Crashers, starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson as two irresponsible bachelors who crash weddings to pick up chicks and get laid. In this movie, weddings are awash with attractive, vulnerable, slutty young girls, raucous mus...

Be Cool
Movie Review | | 2nd April 2005
Smugness is not a quality I particularly look for in a film star. For example, I could quite happily have Jude Law banished from the face of the earth and put up with the bitching I'd get from the entire female population of the planet, just so I don't have to endure his tiny, contended little face on my cinema screen any more....

Cinemassholes #1: Ricky Slade
Movie Feature | Ali | 1st March 2005
Vince Vaughn certainly has an eclectic bunch of misfits on his CV this far in his career, most notably the always money Trent (Swingers), the lounge-lizard villain Reese Feldman (Starsky & Hutch) and the sardonic but athletic Peter La Fleur (Dodgeball). What do all these characters have in common? Simple - they are the very es...

Dodgeball
Movie Review | Ali | 12th September 2004
"I find it's best not to have a goal - aim low, and that way you're never disappointed." It happens to be gym owner Peter LaFleur's life philosophy, but it's also a maxim that serves Dodgeball fairly well - after all, a film that's essentially about throwing balls at people could hardly fail to deliver what it promises. Aiming low is exactly what Dodgeball does best - in fact, it aims for around crotch height, targeting the easiest gut laugh each and every time.
