Cruise! Cameron! Comedy! A pleasing lack of gun wangs!
Considering our first look at Knight & Day was this arty silhouette poster, complete with a woman with what we hope was a gun in her pocket, this first trailer is a big improvement.
A lot's been made of Cruise returning to comedy after what seems like aeons, after his well-received cameo in Tropic Thunder. Frankly, I don't understand why the dude gets such a bad rap all the time. I mean, apart from the alien-worshipping and Nazi-science and Katie-napping and sofa-jumping.
I've got lots of time for Tom Cruise and his movies, particularly ones in which he isn't playing Tom Cruise, the earnest hero with the killer smile. In Knight & Day he even looks a little goofy ("Nobody move or I'll kill myself and then her") and that megawatt smile looks retarded instead of charming.
Directed by James Mangold and formerly known as Wichita, Knight & Day isn't much of a better title but at least it looks like a good old-fashioned action comedy in the same vein as True Lies et al. Plus, for my money, the comic timing in the moped/bridge scene is spot-on. I look forward to this one.
Isn't it strange though how no one really seems fussed that Cameron Diaz is in this too? Like Cruise, she's hasn't made a funny movie in years either.
