Review: Iron Man 2

Iron Man 2
The original Iron Man's success came something like a bolt from the blue; a very welcome superhero debut that nailed its playful tone and established itself as the first part of a much bigger universe. The sequel, however, comes with certain expectations attached: now we know the character's origins, he kinda has to... y'know, do something.

Totally ordinary, which, for a film about a weaponised robot man, is really not a good sign.

The hammer is true, I stayed to watch it.

Oh, it was okay wasn't it? I mean, the fight scene between Rhodey and Stark was empty and stupid, and yes the "battles" were short, but I was glad for that because Iron Man does have all this shit hot tech and he should be able to use it.

What cracked me up the most was Johansson's action sequence. twirly twirly someone else twirly, Scarlett stands up from a crouch, twirly punch someone else twirly punch Scarlett looks over her shoulder. Fine fine editing.

I loved the bit in the car on the racetrack with all them screaming and yelling. If i was stuck in a shunting halfcar with a manic electro russian trying to kill my boyfriend I'd be a bit shouty too.

What the fuck has happened to Garry Shandling's face? Did you see Rourke's hands in the obligatory typing close ups? Is he a shaved bear??
All this and more, after the news.

I've just seen it. As much as I love comics based films, I didn't fully enjoyed IM2. Or using other words: after IM my expectation were flying high and I feel not all of them were met.

I mean, it's great in comparison to Spider-Man or other Marvel films (except IM and X2). In theory, IM2 has it all: dream cast (I'm starting to believe Sam Rockwell can make any role, either as serious (Moon) or cliched, comic character), bazillion dollars budget, established characters, great music (maybe detail, but c'mon, one must appreciate it). Still, I wanted it to be better written. Some scenes should be longer (final battle), some shorter (999th argument between Tony and Pepper), some dialogues could have been better. I know, I contradict myself: I want Marvel comic film not to be too much Marvellish. And to have more boobs. But it applies to every film. Must give up porn. Got brainwashed. Or brainbloodleaked.

Weird thing, I must add. After seeing IM I was also confused. Only after seeing IM for the second, and third time I started to love it, in every piece. Maybe the pattern will work here, as well?

I got smashed on booze soon after seeing it so here's what I actually remember;

It was OK, a REAL lack of action though. I re-watched the first one the night before and was reminded of how short the final battle was, well it's Gone With The Wind compared to the "epic" final battle here.

Iron Man and War Machine go through the bad guys like a hot knife through butter, then Rourke shows up and is just as easy to defeat in his new shiny armour as he was when he didn't have it.

One or two bits made me smile but once again most of the best lines are in the trailer. I missed Thor's hammer after the credits (if that is indeed true).

I must have something wrong with me, because I cannot for the life of me find any enthusiasm for this, and found the first one dullus in extremis.

Was explaining to a friend what I think the problem is - you can't see his eyes - which means it'll never escape being CGI. Which means it might as well be filmed like this:

This was really fun to watch. I think the opening 20mins seemed to drag a bit but once it got into a rhythm, it was just as fun as the first film.

Eeeee! I'm going to see Kick-Ass tonight (I know, I know), but IM2 is definitely next. Definitely.

Sam Rockwell, why do you never dance into my florist?
