Review: The Girl Who Played With Fire

The Girl Who Played With Fire
The Girl is everywhere at the moment. Between posters advertising the DVD release of her excellent Dragon Tattoo and what seems to be 80 % of all public-transport commuters reading about her Hornet's Nest (stop sniggering) - not to mention Fincher's forthcoming US adaptation(s?) - Stieg Larsson's so-called Millennium Trilogy is certainly enjoying unprecedented popularity at the moment. And yet with this, the second film of the series, we have already reached the first stumbling block.

Overly long for what is actually a fairly predictable and straightforward storyline but nowhere near as bad the reviews had led me to believe.

Nailed it. Was really looking forward to this as I loved Dragon Tattoo, and I enjoyed the book, too - possibly more than the first. But it's a bit of a disappointment - always in a constant rush to squeeze a huge book into feature length.

The most cinematic bit of the book - the Caribbean opening - isn't even in the film, and neither is the last, perfect line. Didn't know this until afterwards, but it was all actually filmed and broadcast in Sweden as a six-part mini-series. I dare say this is the way to watch it.

Don't hold much hope for Hornet's Nest, it's all exposition and clunky courtroom testimonies. Works in the book, but not on film. Sad really.
