Review: The Iron Lady
Posted by Ali at 16:33 on 07 Jan 2012 Reviews A-Z
The Iron Lady – from the creative team who brought you Mamma Mia! – is a curious beast; part political bio, part character study, it takes huge liberties in dissecting the professional and personal life of Lady Thatcher, yet fundamentally refuses to pass judgement on any of her policies. The aim was clearly to focus on Maggie the person, not Maggie the larger than life figurehead, but I'm not sure I really see the point of making a biopic on the country's most infamous Prime Minister while never actually bothering with any of her politics. You might as well make a movie on how Fred West was such a talented gardener.

Better than I expected it to be. Politically its a bit soft but that was unavoidable so they've wisely decided to bypass Left or Right & look at it from a personal view. Unsurprising Meryl Streep is phenomenal, just awesome to behold.

Thatcher, Thatcher Milk Snatcher..
She was Secretary of Education in the early 70's at the time lots of cuts were made in the education system, most notably charging schools for milk and so she is the milk snatcher...pretty sad that after all the stability she brought during a tough time, being first female leader etc etc, she is remebered for taking Milk away from children in secondary schools who probably didnt want it anyway.

Happened 9 years before she was PM and not strictly true. She was given a budget for education by Heaths government which proposed axing free milk for all kids, not just the primary and nursery school kids that she actually managed to protect.
And just before I get accused of bias, I'm a Labour voter and always have been :)

Interesting thing, this completely negative attitude towards MT among fellow countrymen with no positives whatsoever. Not that I'm her supporter or something, just... Her being major political figure ends somewhere in 1990 and I believe you guys did not witness her a decade time of ironing. How come you grew so much hate? You just repeat it cause your parents do it? Just wondering. As a non British guy.

It was always going to be a problem with such a polarising figure. Whether you present it as harsh reality or gloss, you'll get claims of political bias either way. Sounds like they've bottled it and just ignored the politics entirely.
