Top 20 Crazy Bastards

Top 20 Crazy Bastards
Heroes are boring. Shoot gun, blow up car, quip, save girl, fuck her. Nope, given the choice between a clean-cut, rational character and an unshaven, mumbling, drugged-up lunatic, we'll take the schizo every time. Nothing lights up the silver screen like a bona fide wacko, so we've gone to great lengths to bring together the cra...

Donnie Darko (from Donnie Darko) and Li'l Ze (City of God) should totally make the list, especially Li'l Ze (I'd put him at #1)

Ah, but I'm guessing that would be quite similar to my 'Top 20 Cock-Teasers' article. See, I'm not sexist!

I think it's time to answer cries of sexism with a "Top 20 crazy bitches" article.

Yep, that oughta do it.

Gary Freakin' Oldman!!! YESSSSSSS!!!! The man is the #1 best character actor alive. He's almost completely unrecognizable in every movie he's ever been in, including that guest appearance on Friends and ESPECIALLY in Hannibal. Love that guy. I was thinking that stare-off between him & Christopher Walken... man, that would be the Apocalypse. I mean Walken is creepy/scary but Oldman's just Psychotic. Also, I agree with Misery vote, gotta add her. Plus I'd swap Hannibal's spot with Patrick Bateman. Hannibal's definately more insane than Patrick. I giggled with glee when I saw Garland Green.

Damn that Morgan Freeman and his all-knowing-voice!
I see your point. I guess it just comes down to your definition of crazy. I think just because Doe was in control, doesnt mean something in his head wasnt broken.

David Mills: I seem to remember us knocking on your door.
John Doe: Oh, that's right. And I seem to remember breaking your face.

I do love that reply. Simple, brutal, deadpan.

Somerset even points out that John Doe isn't crazy, and that's why he's winning. I did debate over this one, with him and Lecter. But Lecter turned into a pantomime crazy man by the end, so he made it and John Doe didn't. Also - and whisper it - John Doe kinda had a point.

Look, i'm bad, angry and calculating but i havent lopped the head of Gwyneth Paltrow. Admittedly it's on my to-do list and i may throw-in Chris Martin as a bonus but seriously. John Doe is a crazy bastard, he's a crazier bastard than most on that list. He killed people he didnt like and basically likened himself to the angel of death. He was off his fucking head and at least as crazy and Hannibal, possibly moreso. At least Hannibal could argue that he was just hungry.

A little sexist? What about Kathy Bates in Misery, Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction, Judi Dench in Notes on a Scandal, Bette Davis in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, Piper Laurie in Carrie, Betsy Palmer in Friday the 13th, Michelle Pfieffer in Batman returns, Angelina Jolie in Girl Interrupted....Also would have been cool to include James Cagney for White Heat, Peter Finch for Network, Robert deniro for TAXI DRIVER (or even the king of comedy), malcolm mcdowell for a clockwork orange, Martin Sheen for Badlands, Michael Caine in Dressed to Kill

I'll hold my hands up on this one: Chopper and Rutger Hauer in The Hitcher should be on this list. John Doe, like I said before, wasn't crazy. He was just very bad, very angry and very calculating.

And let's not forget Kiriyama Kazuo in Battle Royale. Not a word did he utter, he let his guns do the talking. And killing. Truly a force to be reckoned with from the best Japanese film ever made since The Eel.

How about Arnold in The Terminator? Nothing beats the original, esp the scene in the Tech Noir nightclub And why not John Astin as Professor Putrid Gangreen? He was a howl!

'And last week I'd seen this Arnold Schwarzenegger movie where he wastes all these muthas with an Uzi.'

Eminem.

Some guy on Digg mentioned Rutger Hauer in The Hitcher. All I can say is 'Doh'.

Kurtz is no more crazy than everyone else in Apocalypse Now. The whole point of the movie is that the whole world is crazy.

Watching Trainspotting makes me want to speak Scottish for a short while afterwards. And yeah, doss cunt is a favourite. I love the scene where Begbie is telling the story about the pool game, then you hear it from Sick Boy's POV.

Tom Noonan as Francis Dollarhyde in Mann's 'Manhunter'
scene: he puts his giant false chompers in and bites off the whiny reporters face!

I like the captions. Begbie: Doss cunt. That was a favourite of mine for a very long time.

FYI:In the original " The Texas chainsaw massacre" no name is given for "Leatherface" other that. In Texas chainsaw massacre two "Leather face is refered to as "Buba" and "Jr." and his family name is given as "Sawyer". It wasn't until the TMC remake that his name was changed to "Thomas Hewitt". I would suggest changing the vid clip to one fron the remake.

I think Gary Oldman versus Christopher Walken in a big-budget stare-off might be the most intense movie of all time. Occasionally they have to look off to one side to burn holes in Leonardo DiCaprio, then commence staring at each other.

You totally forgot about Christopher Walken, that man is the ultimate psychopath. He can go from calm to balistic in seconds.

For me, being a crazy bastard is being to do something unthinkable and not being able to see anything wrong with it. I'd say introducing a sledgehammer to someone's ankles in the name of love comes pretty high up the headcase chart. I still cant watch that scene.
John Doe is a bit similar to Lecter but he's still off his head and capable of anything.

"Annie Wilkes in Misery"- Definately should've been in there! Amazing performance by Kathy Bates, shes one of my fave psychos, along with Norman Bates and Hannibal Lecter

Yeah I forgot about the mirror scene. And the bunny. Although the disdainful snort Logan gives the bunny in the grave suggests it's a Gal vision? I'm going to rewatch that right now.
"What's that?"
"...a goat"
"What's it staring at me for?"

Yeah, but there's the bit where Don's looking in the bathroom mirror hearing voices telling him everyone's laughing at him.

"Get me a t-shirt, I'm sweating like a cunt."

Best uses of the c-word ever.

I forgot just how ferocious Ghandi is in Sexy Beast watching that clip. Also I think that 3:25 clip has more swearing in than any other film in it's entirety. 'Cept maybe a Scorcese film.

The youtube thing is a nice idea. Not sure what qualifies as crazy though, Don Logan in Sexy Beast isn't crazy like Jack Torrance - Torrance sees ghosts whilst Logan is merely an animal. *shrugs*
Nice to see Sexy Beast getting some love in whatever way. "You look like leather, look like a fuckin' handbag. Fat cunt"

I'm sure there's someone i'm forgetting.
