Why I Hate... Modern Horror

Why I Hate... Modern Horror
Let's assume, for all intents and purposes, that I scare easily. Let's say, just theoretically, that I lose control of my limbs every time I see a spider, jump several notches up the homo-o-meter when I hear bumps in the night and break into a cold sweat whenever someone tells Noel Edmonds 'no deal'. Theoretically. One would ...

I love horror movies but in my opinion the best ones were made in the seventies. All time favourite? Halloween. Why? Cos it is simple and effective .... and did not need seven sequels .. and don\'t get me started on remakes. It\'s the age old discussion of where all the original ideas in hollywood have gone. Re-imagining of a classic ... bollocks. Basically means we\'ll use the same script, give everyone a mobile phone and give in a score with a thumping base line. In recent years the only film I felt lived up to the 70\'s horror genre was the original SAW ... I thought it was a brilliant idea and like HALLOWEEN, it was simple and effective. And successful so therefore spawning a couple of sequels. HAven\'t seen three yet though? so probably shouldn\'t comment until I have.
I too wonder what happened to the scares. Laughable violence, copious blood and obligatory nudity are things that do not scare me ... what happened to the scares. Did anyone happen to see the trailer for \"horrorfest\" that was held in the states last year? \"Eight movies to die for\" previously banned for being to scary and released at the local multiplex? The trailer was disturbing but it was probably all in the editing.
Pandemonium recommends \"Pan\'s Labyrinth\" I thought the trailers looked very interesting .. I shall check it out if you rate it so highly my friend.

I dunno. I just know that if I see a trailer for a horror film these days, I almost definitely know it\'ll be terrible. Take The Return, for example. SMG is haunted by spirits in an old house. Haven\'t we seen this movie before?

I\'m not saying there\'s no more good horror films being made, because there are, it\'s just none are getting a release in my neck of the woods. I really must hunt out some good ones on DVD, might check out Switchblade Romance.

Don\'t hold out much hope for \'Them\'.

Great article. Makes you wonder whether horror might experience a renaissance in the future, I mean surely it can\'t get worse than it is now... Can it...?

\"characters, plot and dialogue\"
\"obtusely beautiful people wandering lamely into obvious situations of certain death and a final shot that reveals that the killer is not dead / has a brother / is now a ghost.\"

Is this only modern horror you\'re talking about, or pretty much 3/4 of all horror movies ever made?

Pan\'s Labyrinth would never have gotten made 10 yesrs ago, and in it we have the best horror movie / dark fairy tale ever made IMHO.
