Review: The Laundromat is a quick spin with spotty results
Movie Review | Luke Whiston | 24th October 2019
It sucks that there are people in the world whose only goal is the pursuit of wealth without any thought for the human cost, and that these people live lives of fabulous opulence we could only imagine while poverty exists, but that's the natural result of a society based on capitalism. I mean, we're all like it to some extent - we've got to pay the bills and put food on the table, and the goose game on Nintendo Switch isn't going to buy itself - but those who possess the ability to hoard more money than they could ever spend are equipped to rise to the top of the heap at our expense. It's a maddening situation, although if pushed I'd say I was more angry about geese right now. That seems like a problem I could solve. Forget billionaires; we need to kill all the geese.

Review: Game of Thrones bows out burning bridges, own fingers, everything
TV Review | Luke Whiston | 21st May 2019
So now that the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Game of Thrones are at an end - two of the most popular, costliest and consistently epic franchises to ever exist in film and TV - and we've chewed over when and how to talk about them online, are we at some kind of 'spoiler event horizon' or a 'spoiler singularity'? I don't know either, just wanted to say something that sounded clever. Tits and willies and dragons eh, cor!

Review: Guava Island has lovely sights but hums a dark tune
Movie Review | Luke Whiston | 9th May 2019
Donald Glover is a man of impossible talent and unparalleled style. At the age of just 35 he is already an accomplished actor, director, writer, singer and producer - both on TV and in the music world. So acclaimed is he, there is a lengthy Wikipedia page dedicated purely to his many awards and nominations in the arts. He is politically aware, incorporating challenging satire into his work, and often performs in aid of charities and causes. He has 2.43 million Twitter followers despite never having Tweeted. He was the only logical choice to play Lando Calrissian, the coolest man in the galaxy, in the Han Solo movie because he is in fact the coolest man in the universe. His entire being is infectious and we as a species should be thanking fortune, serendipity, providence, or whatever deity you believe controls time and space, that we are all alive under the same sky - a sky from which the stars look down upon him to learn how to shine. Yes, yes that's much better than my original opener: 'if Get Out was real I would save up for the guy who plays Troy in Community'.

I'm sorry, the old Tom Cruise can't come to the phone right now. Why? Oh, because he's DEAD.

Baby Driver
Movie Review | Matt Looker | 20th June 2017
I don’t envy Edgar Wright. I mean, I do, obviously. He’s stupidly talented, hangs out with cool Hollywood people and totally rocks the kind of facial hair you’d normally only see on a second-year arts grad student. But he is also under an awful lot of pressure to meet impossibly high expectations considering his relatively short film résumé. Think about it: two cult comedy classics, followed by the visually-impressive-but-niche Scott Pilgrim, and then a quick return to close off the Cornetto Trilogy. That’s it. Now everyone is ready to hail this new Edgar Wright movie as the champion of the summer, but what even IS an ‘Edgar Wright movie’?

17 random observations on Wonder Woman because a review posted this late would just seem sarcastic
Movie Feature | Ali Gray | 17th June 2017
I saw Wonder Woman about two weeks ago. Then I wrote some stuff about it that I couldn't coalesce into a coherent review. Then I got into that Netflix show about the dead nun. Then I went on holiday. And now, I give that incoherent gibberish to you, dear reader.

The Good Dinosaur
Movie Review | Ali Gray | 26th November 2015
After hitting dizzying new heights with this summer's mind-bending, mind-bonding masterpiece Inside Out, Pixar are now suffering the subsequent downer: not only is The Good Dinosaur one of the bleakest and most relentlessly grim movies they've ever made, it's possibly the lowest high concept movie they've conceived to date. Although there's no denying The Good Dinosaur is the most incredible-looking movie of the year, its beauty hides the scars of a screenplay that has been diced and spliced like dino DNA at Jurassic Park.

Pan
Movie Review | Becky Suter | 12th October 2015
There are some things you would expect from a Peter Pan movie: flying kids, oppressive parental figures, some fairies and shit. Pirates singing Nirvana songs, galleons trying to out-race spitfires and Hugh Jackman huffing pixie dust probably not so much. Creating a gritty backstory for a 12-year-old can't have been easy, but director Joe Wright pulls it off with great aplomb, making it one of the most entertaining visits to Neverland so far. Add in thrilling action sequence after action sequence, and you've basically got Mad Max: Fury Road for kids.

Your guide to understanding US politics through House of Cards
TV Feature | Ed Williamson | 19th February 2015
American politics is a right old carry-on. They have ballot papers designed by Chad Michael Murray and they don't even have a rich family they pay a huge annual salary to nonce off teenage girls and dress up as Nazis at parties. If only House of Cards made it easier to understand WAIT IT DOES
