  • Am I Coen crazy: Raising Arizona (1987)

    Movie Feature | Matt Looker | 28th August 2018

My casual, long-term project of watching all the Coen Brothers’ films in order has stepped up a gear after just one film thanks to finding out that The Big Lebowski is being re-released at the end of September for its 20th anniversary. And if I can’t time my retrospective to coincide with everyone else’s in that week then really I miss my only opportunity to make any of this appear relevant.

  • Am I Coen crazy: Blood Simple. (1984)

    Movie Feature | Matt Looker | 17th August 2018

Welcome to a new semi-irregular feature in which I try to understand my general ambivalence towards the Coen brothers in the face of their overwhelming success and popularity. Do I lack the critical faculty to truly appreciate their work? Do I just not ‘get’ them? Am I an idiot? Most likely, yes, but let’s all go on a filmographical journey to confirm!

  • Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: season one

    TV Review | Ali Gray | 17th August 2016

It's quite rare for me to embark on a televisual adventure without at least several months of prep: five-star reviews, extensive marketing campaigns, assurances that the hours of my life I'll inevitably lose to this programme will totally be worth it. But sometimes I like to be surprised. So, with no other recommendation than the accolade "the best show with the worst title" (copyright some rando on Twitter), I started watching Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on Netflix last week. 18 glorious episodes later, I am here to give you your five-star review, your marketing campaign and your assurance that the hours of your life you'll lose to this programme will totally be worth it. Fittingly for a show about obsessive behaviour in relationships, I am late-night-phone-calls, million-text-Monday, snot-streaming-down-face-outside-bedroom-window OBSESSED with this show.

  • Crazy Stupid Love

    Movie Review | Ali | 20th September 2011

Crazy Stupid Love is a movie that wants it all. It's a romcom that knows it's a romcom and wants you to know it knows it's a romcom. Characters reference popular movies and the clichés therein; by pointing out the elephants in the room, they're allowing us in on the joke. "Damn, love is crazy and stupid," they nudge and wink to us, but because they acknowledge the craziness and stupidity of movie romance, they assume they'll get away with it. Luckily for us, the characters of Crazy Stupid Love are so darn charming, they do.

  • Crazy Heart

    Movie Review | Darren | 9th March 2010

"I used to be somebody, now I am somebody else" sings Bad Blake, Jeff Bridges' veteran country singer, through liquor-hardened vocals. He used to be a highly regarded country star, but his crumbling career has turned him into a hard luck story more akin to blues music than country: he's tired, broke, an alcoholic and down on his luck. Blake's star has dimmed to a status that his agent can only use to illuminate such small-time venues as bowling alleys, where he reluctantly plays to a handful of loyal fans.

  • All About Steve

    Movie Review | Rob | 18th January 2010

Sandra Bullock. Hollywood A-list. Attractive, likeable and never takes herself too seriously. The question is, how has 2009's most successful female US box-office star managed to maintain her Hollywood status, when she's been coasting for so long in various whimsical non-coms? You know, non-coms like The Proposal, and like this unflattering piece of guff.

  • New movie for same old Tim Allen

    Movie Trailer | Matt | 2nd December 2009

It seems that Tim Allen has moved on from starring in mediocre comedies - he's now directing one instead! Starring Tim Allen. Oh.

  • Crazy Heart trailer hits all the right notes

    Movie Trailer | Matt | 17th November 2009

The Dude is getting all up in everyone's Oscar predictions this week now that the trailer for his new flick Crazy Heart has hit the web. The film sees him play a down-on-his-luck country singer who tries to rediscover his former glory. Think The Wrestler with guitars and snakeskin boots.

  • Top 20 Crazy Bastards

    Movie Feature | Ali | 4th October 2007

Heroes are boring. Shoot gun, blow up car, quip, save girl, fuck her. Nope, given the choice between a clean-cut, rational character and an unshaven, mumbling, drugged-up lunatic, we'll take the schizo every time. Nothing lights up the silver screen like a bona fide wacko, so we've gone to great lengths to bring together the cra...
