    Movie Review | Ed Williamson | 19th January 2016

Spotlight appears to tick all the boxes as far as the true-life awards-season investigation drama goes. All-star, mainly male, ensemble cast to demonstrate serious dramatic heft; weighty subject matter in dealing with the cover-up of institutional child abuse. It makes a few choices you aren't expecting, though, and I can't figure out whether or not this elevates it.

  • Ray Donovan acting class: how to demonstrate range by standing

    TV Feature | Ed Williamson | 30th July 2014

You've got it all here: Eddie Marsan's threatening sideways lean, Jon Voight's insouciant turn askance, Liev Schrieber's straightahead hands-in-pockets furrowed look, Pooch Hall's lean with added gangsta hands, and Dash Mihok's unaccountable leg-spreading. There's not a male character archetype in the entire acting gamut that isn't covered by one of these stances. (I managed five episodes.)

  • This is the official Mexican poster for Lee Daniels' The Butler

    Movie News | Ali Gray | 5th October 2013

Not sure what my favourite bit is: the cluster of presidential force ghosts, the creepy tree/dead spider in the top left or the fact that I can't help reading the title in the voice of Bumblebee Man from The Simpsons. (via IMP)

  • Goon

    Movie Review | Rob | 2nd January 2012

Ice hockey sits pretty atop my 'If I was an American high-schooler, I'd definitely think about playing it' list. Unfortunately, Hollywood doesn't appear to share my enthusiasm for needless icy bloodlust. There have been plenty of American football, baseball and basketball movies, but when it comes to ice hockey, what do we have? Slap Shot? That's 35 years old. The Mighty Ducks? Pfft, Goon would smash its teeth in and down a beer in celebration.
