Moon
Movie Review | Ali | 15th July 2009
Considering that Neil Armstrong's giant leap for mankind ranks as one of the most recent triumphs in the grand scheme of human exploration, it's a little odd that science-fiction has never really landed on the Moon. A case of 'been there, done that', perhaps? Maybe Apollo 11 robbed the Moon of its mystery. But given that every h...

Death Proof
Movie Review | Ali | 11th August 2007
Quentin Tarantino is not the unstoppable force we once thought he was. There was a time when he could do no wrong - his new movies were eagerly anticipated like no others, his name attached to a project was a guaranteed seal of quality and every fevered word that flew out his mouth and past his gigantic chin was like a dagger in...

In The Loop
Movie Review | Ali | 19th April 2009
In the same way that rock stars watch This Is Spinal Tap and cringe at the accuracy, so must politicians gaze into the mirror of The Thick Of It and recognise elements of the ridiculous that seem all too familiar. Not seen Armando Ianucci's sublime political satire? Click here, wait 1-2 days for delivery and come back smiling af...

Up
Movie Review | Ali | 16th October 2009
Have Pixar outgrown the animation industry? You could certainly argue they have. Typically the domain of sassy talking animals and cutesy characters, it's a playground which Pixar seem to have grown bored with.

Die Hard 4.0
Movie Review | Ali | 18th July 2007
Beating Indiana Jones to the punch for the winner of the Most Unnecessary Return From Retirement award, Officer McClane steps backs in the field some 12 years after he last saw action. For a movie that was largely expected to curl off a big pixellated PG-13 turd on one of the best action franchises ever, Die Hard 4.0 is surprisi...

The Firm
Movie Review | Matt | 14th September 2009
"We come in peace, we leave you in pieces," says Gary Oldman's Bex in the 1988 original version of The Firm, and you believed it. Oldman played the vicious character in this made-for-TV movie with such the right degree of humour and venom that it still remains one of his best performances.
He owns the role throughout and, as dated as the film now appears, Oldman is still captivating. So here's the question: how do you remake a Gary Oldman movie without Gary Oldman? -
Godzilla
Movie Review | Ali Gray | 12th May 2014
Godzilla is the kind of excellent monster movie you can only make when you've already seen someone else make it exactly wrong as your reference. Though director Gareth Edwards first movie, the fittingly titled Monsters, was a stunning debut, Roland Emmerich's ill-advised 1998 Godzilla remake acts as Edwards' training wheels – a clear guide on what not to do. Where Emmerich favoured levity, Edwards favours atmosphere; where Emmerich keeps it local, Edwards goes global; Emmerich's disowned creature became officially known as 'Zilla'; Edwards' king of monsters is quickly labelled "a God". And rightly so, because this Godzilla stands tall in the modern pantheon of monster movies: a no-nonsense beast from beyond that makes his 90s counterpart look like a bogey with legs.

300
Movie Review | Ali | 24th March 2007
I used to think I had a penis until I saw 300. Once in a while, a movie comes along that's so extraordinarily butch, it makes even the most pumped-up gym-jockeys look like spaghetti-armed girls. 300 is so manly, if I was to re-write this article, it would take up the top 15 slots all by itself. If you step back and view 300 f...

Dorian Gray
Movie Review | Matt | 10th September 2009
When Oscar Wilde wasn't declaring his own genius, others did it for him. They still do; the catalogue of his works is considered essential for literary study. What's surprising then about this big screen adaptation of his only novel, A Picture of Dorian Gray, is the liberty taken with the source material.

Filth
Movie Review | Neil Alcock | 4th October 2013
Bruce Robertson is a cunt. A lying, thieving, cheating, racist, misogynist, homophobic shitstick who would sooner drug you and steal your watch than give you the time of day, and if he did give you the time of day it would be after looking at your own watch, which he has just stolen. He pinches kids' balloons, forces underage girls to nosh on his junk and screws his friends' and colleagues' wives. He's also a Detective Sergeant in Edinburgh's Lothian Constabulary, and probably the greatest lead character in cinemas this year.
